5 Questions with Treza Bettencourt

  1. What are your favorite pair of shoes? My favourite at the time are a clunky pair of black shoes made by xhilaration. All man made materials. (No animal skin for me.)
  2. If you were on a desert island and could only take 3 cds with you to listen what would they be? 3 books? (I hope I can take a boom box, book light, and batteries too!) CDs would be Garbage, Scissor Sisters and Goldfrap. Books: "Ask and it is Given" by Esther and Jerry Hicks, "Walking in This World" by Julia Cameron, and Tess Gerritsen's latest fiction book.
  3. If you could send one message to the world what would it be? Love one another! Such an old message.
  4. Do you feel that the Tampa bay Area is a viable area for working artists? Not from what I hear and experience, but I'd like to believe that it will start changing for the best.
  5. If not what needs to be done locally to make the area more artist friendly? More venues for the up and coming artists, more local artist support groups for networking and brainstorming this subject.

Treza is a native of Terceira, one of the Azorean Islands off the coast of Portugal, and one of ten children from a very artistic and musical family. She attended Wheelock college in Boston, Massachusetts, where she acquired her teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education. In 2004, Treza resigned from her teaching position in order to dedicate more time to her art and creative projects.

She served as a board member for Women Artists Rising, where she found enormous inspiration and support from other artists. In 2004, Treza Bettencourt organized the very successful event: "Outrageous Art Performances" at Gold Dragon Gallery in South Tampa, Florida.

A self-taught artist who paints mostly in Acrylics, she also enjoys using Pastels, Colouring Pencils, Water Colours, Stamps and Collage materials. Treza's art expands beyond the canvas to include Greeting Cards, Decorative Journals, Hand-painted Furniture, Decorative Wooden Boxes, etc.

Treza's desire and goal is to turn her love for creating art into her main income source. She has gathered some collectors of her art in the Tampa Bay, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey areas. Some of her art is currently on display at Mirta's Gallery and coffee house in South Tampa, and she will be participating in the Art for Life show on Sept. 30, and hopefully the next Gala Corina.
